Holy Hollywood! The Secret Message and Hidden History of the Hollywood Blockbuster

Overview

May the Force be with you is one of the best known quotes in the history of the cinema, demonstrating the religious nature of the films we watch. From its inception, film-makers have used religious ideas and spiritual themes as a central element in some of the biggest blockbusters ever made - Star Wars , Spiderman , Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, The Da Vinci Code , The Lord of the Rings , Blade Runner , The Wizard of Oz and many more. Holy Hollywood! reveals the real story behind the religious content of the cinema - the authentic role model for Indiana Jones and how the Nazis really did search for occult artefacts; how the Jesus myth has been used in films as diverse as Frankenstein , E.T. and Spiderman and what Greek mythology, alchemy and the Rosicrucians have to do with Harry Potter. Author Martin Leafe unveils the secret history of Hollywood, how the film studios have used religious motifs to create multi-million dollar blockbusters - and how these movies have influenced our view of religion. Holy Hollywood! is not only an important addition to the standard works on cinema, alongside Chris Vogler's The Writer's Journey , Robert McKee's Story and Syd Field's Screenplay - The Foundation of Screenwriting , but also shows just how deeply rooted in our everyday world sagas, myths and mysteries are. Contains extensive Reference and Index sections. About the author: Martin Leafe was born in 1967 in north-east England. He achieved a B.A. in Comparative Religions and Film Studies and an M.A. in Comparative Religions. Since moving to Germany in 2000, Martin has worked as a communications consultant for international companies and has lectured in Comparative Religions at Hannover and Bremen Universities. Holy Hollywood! developed from his fascination with the cinema and religion - particularly Carl Gustav Jung's theories of the Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious and Joseph Campbell's theory of The Hero's Journey, a relationship which Martin began to be aware of in the early 1990's. In his free time Martin has won critical acclaim for his acting and directing work with an English theatre group in Hamburg. In connection to his interest in Star Wars, Martin has a Star Wars collection which would be the envy of any ten year old
