Overview

Eyewitness Holocaust is divided into eight Chapters: 1 - The Jews of Europe documents the rich variety of European Jewish life, as well as the deep seam of European anti-Semitism, prior to 1933. 2 - Nazi rule deals with life under the Nazis culminating with Kristallnacht. In particular it tracks how anti-Semitism came to seem normal. 3 - The Ghettos examines life in the ghettos, specifically documenting how their inhabitants resisted their captivity both spiritually and physically. 4 - The Camps documents the ways the Nazis went about systematically killing Jews and others, at first, with firing squards, and later on, with meticulously organized concentration and death camps. 5 - Stories of Survival looks at the sometimes remarkable ways Jews cheated death thanks to their own initiative or the bravery of others. 6 - Liberation starts as the war ends in 1945 with horror of the death marches and the indescribable sights witnessed by the liberating Russian, American, and British soldiers. 7 - Aftermath takes stock of the death toll and considers how Holocaust victims (and perpetrators) went on to build new lives, commonly only starting to recount their experiences in their twilight years. 8 - Unfinished Business deals with issues such as compensation payments for victims, stolen property, and the ongoing debate about how best to commemorate and teach the Holocaust to future generations.
