OverviewThe book offers a cultural and social history of cinema in the Balkans from its beginnings to the rise of television in the early 1970s. Hollywood in the Balkans refers to the fact that the film business was dominated by foreign production companies, but primarily by Hollywood productions, as there were hardly any in-house productions in the first decades of the film. The book shows that until the middle of the 20th century, cinema was an almost exclusively urban phenomenon and was largely avoided by the Muslim population. The rise of cinema to a visual mass entertainment only took place in the 1960s, when a film industry was also able to develop in the Balkan countries.
