Hmong Leadership in Lao and American Politics: The Past, Present, and Future

Overview

This book explores the Hmong leadership in Lao and American politics during the 20th and 21st centuries. It emphasizes the importance of having Hmong individuals in leadership positions to effectively represent and advocate for the interests and perspectives of the Hmong community. By having Hmong leaders in both private and public offices, the book argues that the Hmong community worldwide would benefit, and their voices would be better heard and acknowledged. However, despite the potential and aspirations of Hmong individuals, opportunities and supportive paths to leadership still need to be improved, resulting in the persistent underrepresentation of Hmong in state, national, or global leadership positions. The book sheds light on this issue, calling for dismantling systemic barriers and creating a more inclusive and empowering environment for Hmong individuals aspiring to leadership roles. Additionally, the book presents the results of a research study conducted by the author, exploring Hmong leadership in Lao and American politics across the past and present to shape the future of Hmong leadership. The study comprised seven participants, all former civilians and Army leaders. Among them, three had served as high-ranking officers in the Royal Lao Army. One participant held a prominent administrative position within the Royal Lao government, while another served as a minister for the Lao PDR government. One participant was an elected community leader, and another had held an elected office in the United States. All participants were born in Laos and gained exposure to leadership theories during their public service.
