She has worked in international health and gender issues for over 30 years. Diagnosed with HIV in 1992, she is former chair of the International Community of Women living with HIV/AIDS (ICW), was honoured with a 2007 World YWCA award for innovative leadership in the global response to HIV and in 2015 was nominated as one of 300 women leaders in global health by the Global Health Programme at the Graduate Institute in Geneva.
