Overview

Excerpt from History of the Worshipful Company of Glaziers of the City of London, Otherwise the Company of Glaziers and Painters of Glass The domestic feeling once introduced permeated the guild, and from the earliest times in the 13th century we find the institution of family devotion perpetuated by the appointment of a Chaplain. All meetings Of the com munity commenced with divine worship, while the household charity and benevolence, doubtless lacking discrimination and guiding rules, were regu lated by definite areas Of almsgiving and assistance. This feeling, in spite of the vicissitudes to which the London City Companies have been subjected during the passing centuries, remains paramount to the present day, and the benevolent attitude of the Fraternities to deserving institutions has passed into a proverb. It is true that a relapse occurred shortly after the commencement of the Renaissance, when the greed of gold, fed by over whelming prosperity, choked the sources whence the fount of almsgiving had flowed it was, however, only temporary, and one may safely assert that the general trend Of the Guilds' aims and Objects from the very first inception have been essentially eleemosynarian.
