Overview

Born in Haiti, the author's passion for history and the story of her homeland runs deep. From an early age, her parents filled her childhood with captivating tales about Haiti's incredible past, particularly the revolutionary events that led Haiti to become the first independent Black nation in the world. Haiti's struggle for freedom and its profound impact on global history ignited a fire in the author. After graduating from Broward College, she pursued her academic journey at the Florida International University, where she earned a degree in International Relations. This degree opened her eyes to a broader view of global history, politics, and cultures, allowing her to connect the dots between Haiti's revolutionary struggle and the movements for freedom and equality around the world. Through her work, the author has realized that many children born in the Haitian diaspora are not fully aware of the profound history that shaped their identity. Often, they know little beyond the music, food, and cultural celebrations, missing out on the deeper, transformative story of Haiti's role in world history. With this book, the author aims to change that by sharing the powerful legacy of Haiti's fight for freedom and the lasting impact it had on the world. Her mission in writing this book is to show young readers that Haiti's story is about much more than the konpa music or delicious foods often associated with it. It is a powerful tale of resilience, bravery, and the triumph of freedom, which altered the course of humanity and continues to inspire change today.
