Longview was one of the first planned cities in the United States, envisioned by its founder, Robert A. Long, to support the largest sawmill in the world at the time, built on the Columbia River in 1922 by his Long-Bell Lumber Company. Renowned urban planners and landscape architects transformed a floodplain at the confluence of the Cowlitz and Columbia Rivers into a ""model city"" with tree-lined boulevards and landscaped parks within a few years. Author Information

Fred J. Baxter, A.I.A. Emeritus, earned his Bachelor of Architecture, cum laude, from Washington State University in 1982 and has been a licensed architect in Washington since 1985. A member of the American Institute of Architects for over 35 years, he became an emeritus member in 2022 after retiring in 2019. He founded Fred Baxter & Associates, Architecture in 1988, focusing on custom residences and mixed-use buildings. A longtime member of the South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club, Fred enjoys retirement between Mukilteo and Langley, Washington, with his wife, Jennifer, and their two adult sons, Joel and Jeffers.
