Overview

This novel retells the true story of a trial that took place in Milan in 1630. It all began with an accusation that was brought on by the mass hysteria surrounding the plague. Several citizens were accused of smearing a pestilent ointment onto doors and buildings to further spread disease in the city. This accusation led to the sentencing and suffering of people that were likely innocent. They were subjected to inhuman torture: brandings, beheadings, being burned alive, and many other horrors. To make an example of these sinners, the house in which this ointment was purportedly created was destroyed. In its place, the church erected a column they named Infamous, and placed a stone to detail how justice had prevailed.
