Hip Hotels: Budget

Overview

Hip Hotels: Budget. Doesn't that sound too good to be true? But true it is. All the ingredients that make a HIP HOTEL - fantasy, originality, style, location - are available at less than astronomical rates, if only you know where to look. No less surprising is that they are truly global in range. Urban or remote, historic or post-industrial, Sunset Boulevard or Australian outback: take your pick. These are hotels created by enthusiasts, and it shows. They include an original canal house on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam, a collection of thatched huts overlooking a black-sand beach in Bali, a palace in the heart of the Marrakesh medina, and a vast converted power plant in Hamburg, its massive stilled machinery looming like sculpture over the interiors. Budget or not, style doesn't get more authentic than this. So plunge in and discover for yourself this latest fabulous - and fabulously affordable - collection of HIP HOTELS.

Reviews

'Hotels that dreams are made of' - Voyager 'Will make you want to up and head for the airport' - i-D 'Buy the books and be inspired' - The Observer 'Hotels so stunning, so individual, so undeniably designer... destinations in their own right' - Wallpaper

This is the latest in the inspirational series that includes City, Escape and France and may perhaps be the most welcome yet: it's relatively easy to locate good hotels where money is no object, less so when the budget is tight. This is an eclectic mix whose key features include the enthusiasm of the owners; old-fashioned hospitality and, often, a conscious attempt to acknowledge and even preserve historic architecture and landscapes - many of the buildings having been saved from destruction by being converted into hotels. So you are offered an antique wooden cabin in Norway and a 16th-century palace in Jaipur, to name just two. Many of the hotels are located in major cities, including Amsterdam, Sydney and Paris and most average around 65 a night. Many are places not advertised in the usual holiday brochures, but only found through word of mouth and books such as this. One of these is the stunningly beautiful Waka Gangga in Bali, where guests are accommodated in thatched bungalows on stilts set within rice paddies. Then there's La Manufacture, perhaps Paris's best-kept secret, which scores highly for stylishness, affordability and location, and further afield, the atmospheric Nilaya Hermitage, set on top of a jungle peak in Goa, and dominated by a rich blue-based colour scheme, with Indian, Mexican and Balinese influences. There's plenty of choice here, with 42 hotels across 24 countries, each sufficiently well illustrated to give a real sense of the decor and atmosphere, as well as contact details and a price guide. A really attractive and useful addition to this trustworthy and imaginative series. (Kirkus UK)
