Hindustani Lyrics (Edition1)

Overview

Hindustani lyrics is a collection of Urdu poetry translated into English. The book compiles works from prominent poets within the Urdu literary tradition, focusing on themes of love, devotion, and mysticism. It offers a window into the cultural and philosophical depth of Urdu verse, particularly influenced by Sufi thought. Featuring poems from renowned poets like Ghalib, Amir, and Zafar, the collection highlights the powerful emotional expressions of love and spirituality. The poems explore the relationship between the lover and the beloved, often portraying God as the ultimate object of love, where the experience of love is seen as a spiritual journey toward divine truth. The collection immerses readers in feelings of longing, existential reflection, and intense passion, presenting love not only as an emotional experience but also as a mystical path to understanding the divine. The anthology serves as a profound introduction to the intersection of love, spirituality, and literature.

Author Information

Inayat Khan was an Indian professor of musicology, singer, exponent of the saraswati vina, poet, philosopher, and a key figure in the transmission of Sufism to the West. Born in Vadodara on July 5, 1882, Khan was deeply rooted in Sufi traditions, which greatly influenced his philosophy and approach to music and poetry. Khan was also a poet and philosopher, using his work to bridge Eastern and Western thought. His life's work remains influential, particularly in the realms of Sufism, music, and philosophy, shaping the spiritual and cultural exchange between the East and the West. Jessie Duncan Westbrook was known for her contributions to the literary world. Westbrook is perhaps best recognized for her translations of various works, particularly those from the Persian and Urdu literary traditions. Her translations helped introduce the beauty and depth of Eastern poetry, particularly Sufi and mystical themes, to Western audiences. She collaborated with Inayat Khan on the translation of Hindustani Lyrics, a collection of Urdu poetry rendered into English. In addition to her work in translation, Westbrook was a poet in her own right, contributing to the rich literary landscape of the time.
