Cellular, muscle, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, digestive and endocrine physiology are covered. The index and the consistent use of varied fonts make it easy for students to locate topics of interest. The use of graphs, figures and tables is excellent, providing a high level of detail without being cumbersome. The incorporation of pharmacological sites of action makes this book a comprehensive learning tool. This book covers material similar to that in other, larger physiology books, but does so at equal or greater depth and with increased efficiency. The depth of coverage is exceptionally balanced in that this book may serve either as a review for physiology or as a reference for future exploration into physiological function. It is intended as a synopsis of the important basic and commonly afflicted physiological processes that are most relevant to future physicians. Building on previous knowledge of anatomical structures, it links function to structure and prepares students for the study of pathology and pharmacology. This book is appropriately written for students in the first and second years of their medical curriculum, prior to the completion of their USMLE Step 1 examination. The author has written other High Yield volumes (embryology, histology, cell and molecular biology), and primary research articles on muscle glucose metabolism. Cellular, muscle, cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, digestive and endocrine physiology are covered. The index and the consistent use of varied fonts make it easy for students to locate topics of interest. The use of graphs, figures and tables is excellent, providing a high level of detail without being cumbersome. The incorporation of pharmacological sites of action makes this book a comprehensive learning tool. The only drawback is the lack of coverage of immune system physiology and the functions of connective tissues. This book covers material similar to that in other, larger physiology books (Human Anatomy and Physiology, 7th edition, by Marieb (Benjamin Cummings, 2005); Hole's Human Anatomy and Physiology, 11th edition, Shier et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2007); Anatomy and Physiology: The Unity of Form and Function, 4th edition, by Saladin (McGraw-Hill, 2007)), but does so at equal or greater depth and with increased efficiency.
