OverviewForty years ago, the discovery of heat resistant polymers opened new ways to make organic materials with exceptional mechanical and electrical properties. Because of their high cost, compared to all other engineering plastics, these polymers were initially employed only for niche applications. However, the tremendous boom of the semiconductor industry was the starting point of important research and development programs to evaluate the potential of polyimides as dielectric films and passivation barriers. The main topics covered are the chemistry and applications of polyphenylquinoxalines (PPQs) and polyimides. Both polymers have been used to make high performance adhesives, composites, coatings, films, fibres and foams, which are now commercially available. PPQs were the first precyclised heterocyclic polymers soluble in organic solvents and they have been worldwide evaluated by the major companies. An extensive compilation of their results provides an overview of what can be done with PPQs.
