Overview

Malcom is energetic and sporty and especially loves football. Malcolm is, also, a little distracted and has trouble focusing sometimes. This can get him in trouble at school and at times makes it difficult for him to keep his mind on the game when playing sport. His friends joke around with him about mistakes, but they all tease each other a little in good fun. They may tease and joke about each other, but they're close friends and really care. However, when Joe ""teases"" Malcolm, it seems different. It's mean-spirited and it feels like Malcolm is Joe's only target. It's has become increasingly hurtful and sometimes Joe purposefully excludes Malcolm. Malcolm realises that Joe is now bullying! With the help of Carlos, his good friend and a trusted adult, Malcolm is able to stand up to Joe.

Reviews

I bought this book for my boys ages 14, 10, 8, 6. It's just good to review this issue and make sure they know to not veer from teasing into bullying and also to be the guy who sticks up for the person being bullied. - Elisa Armstrong This is a great book to navigate telling the difference between teasing and bullying. A great read for middle schoolers or even to read as a family. Encourage discussion and help kids understand they don't have to be bullied and they shouldn't stand by and watch if someone else is being bullied either. - Beth Langley, blogger @ This Lady Blogs What a fantastic book. I worked in middle school for many years and can tell you middle school is all about posturing. Teasing and bullying is such a fine line and while many don't understand the difference, many do. Malcolm could be any kid in school. Thankfully Malcolm's mom told him to stand up for himself. It is something I have always told my kids. Do no start something but if someone starts with you, do not play the victim. Victims get bullied. The author does a wonderful job of explaining the difference of bullying and teasing and by way of Malcolm's mom who explains it to him. Kids will read this book because of the layout. I loved the big bold words that separated the text. It helps the message stand out and makes reading fun for those reluctant readers. - Maria Gagliano, blogger @ Maria's Space Blog

Author Information

Jennifer is an award-winning children's book author who has worked as a school counselor for over a decade. She loves writing social and emotional books to help children and preteens through challenging times. Jennifer's books teach children strategies to work through their issue, and the stories give children the comfort of knowing they're not alone in their struggles. Her books focus on topics such as anxiety, depression, and friendship struggles. Jennifer's books use a quick-read chapter format and are geared toward children ages 9 to 13. Through working with children of all ages, Jennifer has seen the benefits of social-emotional learning books firsthand. Children lose themselves as they're immersed within the stories. They're able to understand complex issues from so many different perspectives by seeing the story through the eyes of the characters. Counseling children, as well as raising two children of her own, has taught her a universal truth: all children want to be loved, valued, and respected for the unique individuals they are. She channels this truth, the importance of providing support to children as they navigate social and emotional issues, and her love for creativity into all her children's books. Her goal is that all children who read one of her books will feel like the stories are speaking directly to them.
