Overview

'...a valuable resource to planners, Councillors and residents interested in the growth of the County' - Marquess of Salisbury, Chancellor, University of Hertfordshire, and Professor Tim Wilson, Vice-Chancellor, University of Hertfordshire. A guidebook written for planning and environmental professionals as well as citizens with a general interest in development, the ""Hertfordshire Guide to Growth"" is the final product from the Hertfordshire Charrette, a public design initiative held in the summer of 2008 at the University of Hertfordshire. Principally authored by Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company with contributions from the Building Research Establishment, the University of Hertfordshire and Turnberry Consulting, the ""Hertfordshire Guide to Growth"" is an illustrated volume which explores the challenges of growth in Hertfordshire and the means of overcoming the development approaches of recent years. Although locally specific, the Guide provides insight into and specific means of analysing development across the UK. The Guide opens by delineating the growth targets set for Hertfordshire by the East of England Plan or Regional Spatial Strategy, which proposes that the county accommodates an additional 83,200 dwellings by 2021. The Guide subsequently illustrates strategies for accommodating these dwellings, specifically introducing six general 'Scenarios' depicting means by which the county might manage development. These Scenarios are described, illustrated and environmentally rated by the Building Research Establishment's Greenprint system. In addition, these analyses are supplemented by case studies selected to illustrate the specific challenges of implementing the Scenario proposals. All of this work was initially prepared through a public consultation process at the Hertfordshire Charrette, which was sponsored by a range of public and private sector groups and attended by local politicians, planners, environmental activists, business owners, community leaders and residents. A feedback 'ballot' included within the Guide offers readers the chance to comment on the development strategies presented and is designed to be used by local authorities or councils interested in obtaining popular input on development approach.
