Heroes from the East: Icons of Chinese Heritage - Volume 1: Amazing True Stories You've Never Heard of

Overview

With over 1.6 billion people of East Asian heritage worldwide, how many of their stories have shaped our world? This book brings the incredible journeys of eight legendary figures of Chinese descent to life for readers aged 8-12. From the Forbidden City to Hollywood, from scientific labs to architectural marvels, this book goes beyond the history books to explore the triumphs and struggles of eight iconic figures. Crafted with wide line spacing and vivid illustrations on every spread, this collection is the perfect introduction to the pioneers who have left an indelible mark on our world. In this volume, you will encounter: Charles K. Kao: The pioneer whose breakthrough in 'fibre optic communications' made today's high-speed internet possible. Bruce Lee: The martial artist and philosopher who shattered stereotypes and became a global symbol of strength and discipline. Michelle Yeoh: The actress whose breathtaking career broke barriers and redefined the modern action hero. Tu Youyou: The Nobel Prize-winning scientist who turned an ancient remedy into a life-saving malaria cure for millions. I.M. Pei: The architectural genius who blended timeless Chinese principles with bold modernism to create iconic structures worldwide. Ching Ling Foo: The master magician who dazzled American audiences and became an international sensation. Empress Dowager Cixi: The woman who ruled China from behind the throne, steering its path into the modern world. Wan Hu: The legendary, perhaps mythical, ""astronaut"" of ancient China whose story of daring innovation continues to inspire. More than just a biography book, this is a journey through time that reveals how a rich cultural legacy fostered genius, resilience, and revolution. It's the perfect gift for curious minds, young history buffs, and any child who loves inspiring true stories.

Author Information

Shiny is a British-born Chinese writer and illustrator. Her debut, Heroes from the East, draws on her professional design skills and a lifelong curiosity to fill a gap she felt growing up: the lack of inspiring East Asian figures in children's literature. An active member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) since 2024, she has found a wonderful community through the organisation. In her spare time, she is passionate about sustainable crafts and the art of upcycling, and can often be found relaxing with a game of Sudoku.
