Hermeneutical Community

Overview

Many Western initiatives exist for theological development in the majority world, but how often do practitioners from the West pause to examine the role they should play in that endeavor? Missions history and church history have revealed inadequacies of imposing foreign theology on local churches, yet the alternative of withdrawing from local theological development appears equally problematic. If, therefore, the outsider's role is neither to impose theology nor withdraw from the task, then what is his or her role? Hermeneutical Community addresses this fundamental question and seeks to lay a sound missiological foundation for local theological development.

Reviews

""If minority world voices are no longer dominant in theological reflection, how should we understand their proper role? Barefoot addresses this central, and often overlooked question, by proposing a method of mutual exchange in a hermeneutical community. A helpful and necessary study."" --William Dyrness, senior professor of theology and culture, Fuller Theological Seminary ""C.S. Barefoot captures the spirit of partnership in mission: neither to colonize nor to disengage. Instead of succumbing to today's world of polarization, he firmly holds the middle ground which is often the most difficult but also the most necessary. This book spells out so helpfully what true friendship and reciprocity looks like in missional spheres, taking seriously Paul's injunction that we all need each other. We would do well to heed this advice."" --Allen Yeh, dean and vice president of academic affairs, International Theological Seminary
