OverviewHermann's tortoise, scientifically known as Testasudo hermannii, is a small to medium-sized tortoise species native to southern Europe. It has a distinctive, domed carapace with a yellow background and black markings. Hermann's tortoises are herbivores, feeding mainly on plants. During the cold months they live on the ground and are dormant. Due to habitat loss and illegal trade, some subspecies are listed as threatened. These turtles are popular as pets, but responsible ownership and conservation efforts are critical to their safety and survival in the wild.
