Heritage Revealed: Revitalizing a Hong Kong Landmark

Overview

Asia Society Hong Kong Center has established its new home at a site steeped in history, cultural significance, and idyllic beauty. Located at the former explosives magazine in Admiralty, Hong Kong, this landmark project was completed in February 2012, turning humble, utilitarian structures for military use into a new cultural and education hub for Hong Kong. The heritage value is within the 1.3-hectare site itself, which was developed in several phases between the 1850s and 1920s. Three of the four existing structures at the site have been classified as Grade I historical buildings. This adaptive re-use has enabled the public to view and access the facilities and the historical buildings for the first time in the history of Hong Kong. The interface of old and new structures also allows visitors to explore the history and heritage of the site while engaging in a wide range of arts, cultural, and intellectually enriching programs.
