Forster studied at Oxford and Princeton Universities. He has taught for over thirty years at the University of Chicago, where he was Chairman of the Philosophy Department for ten years and Glen A. Lloyd Distinguished Service Professor. He is currently Alexander von Humboldt Professor, Chair for Theoretical Philosophy, and Co-director of the International Centre for Philosophy at Bonn University. His historical interests are in ancient philosophy and especially German philosophy. His systematic interests include epistemology (especially skepticism) and philosophy of language (broadly construed). He is the author of eight books and numerous articles.
