It leaves the impression that over-the-counter and prescription drugs are generally safe, while herbals are generally dangerous. It correctly points out potential dangers of herbal drugs: potency can vary widely from batch to batch, natural is not synonymous with safe , and self-prescription may be ineffectual or even life-threatening. Not emphasized are the dangers of prescription and over-the-counter drugs. Aspirin, for example, can damage the kidneys, erode the stomach, exacerbate hemorrhages, and trigger Reye's syndrome in children. If it were presented as a new drug today, the FDA would probably put it on the prescription-only list. As for prescription drugs, about 5% of all hospital admissions are due to adverse reactions to prescription drugs, excluding intentional or accidental overdoses.
