OverviewThis CD-ROM is an interactive tutorial for routine blood smear examination, including: macroscopic evaluation of the stained slide; low-power microscopic examination (including estimation of leukocyte numbers); oil-immersion microscopic examination (including estimation of platelet numbers); morphologic criteria for identifying cells; normal WBC morphology; two 100-cell leukyocyte differential counts, using scanned images from photomicrographs of actual stained blood smears. It provides immediate feedback on the correctness of each cell identification and gives the user a second try at misidentified cells. After 100 cells, the user receives a total score and the chance to review the incorrectly identified cells. The CD-ROM presents 100 completely different cells (not used elsewhere in the program). The cell fields are randomized, so no two users view them in the same order. The user has only one chance to identify each cell and receives no feedback until completion of the differential. User results can be accessed by the instructor, supervisor or prospective employer via a password-guarded journal file.
