Overview

Bryan Donnelly grew up with his mother during the 1970's in a rough part of New York, estranged from his maternal grandparents and fatherless. Now a successful social worker and professor, he is determined to reconnect with all these related strangers whether his mother helps him or not. What he learns about his family exposes him to the ugliness of destructive family ties and grudges, and drags him through the history of the Pacific war and the Attica prison riots. His fractured upbringing threatens his ability to form close relationships, but his strong desire for a normal married life and familial harmony leads him to use his skills and personality to patch his motley crew back together.
