Overview*Hedda Gabler* is a play by Henrik Ibsen, first published in 1890. It follows Hedda, an intelligent but bored woman trapped in a loveless marriage with the dull academic Jørgen Tesman. Desiring control over her life and others, she manipulates those around her, particularly her husband's academic rival, Ejlert Løvborg, whom she once loved. When Løvborg falls into disgrace, Hedda subtly encourages his suicide, hoping for a romanticized ending. However, her schemes unravel, and when Judge Brack blackmails her, threatening her autonomy, she takes her own life in an act of ultimate defiance. The play explores themes of power, freedom, and societal constraints.
