OverviewUntil now, heat shock response has been studied as a model system for analyzing control mechanisms regulating the synthesis of heat shock proteins, and this has provided useful insights into the regulation of gene expression. However, the revelation - causing interest from all quarters in the biology world - has been that heat shock proteins play a major role in a variety of normal cellular processes. They are now the focus of investigation in a number of areas of cell biology, including protein trafficking, signal transduction, DNA replication, transcription, protein synthesis and the assembly of diverse protein structures. All these aspects of the subject are examined in detail in this book as well as their implications for immunology, infectious diseases, chronic degeneration, hyperthermia and cancer research.
