Overview

The third edition of this textbook is arranged for teaching purposes and follows an organized progression from fundamentals to applications. It has been revised with a stronger emphasis on engineering applications and includes more examples and homework problems for applications in nuclear energy and heat exchanger design. The authors begin with fundamental concepts, introducing the governing equation of heat conduction as derived from the First law of Thermodynamics. They then move on to solutions for one-dimensional conduction, orthogonal funcitons, Fourier series and transforms, and multi-dimensional problems. Later sections focus on a series of specialized techniques, including integral equations, Laplace transforms, finite difference numerical methods, and variational formulations. The book is aimed at graduate students and practicing engineers in mechanical engeineering and thermal sciences.
