Overview

In six terrific chapters, Robert Gardner has once again written an exciting and challenging book, covering genetics and heredity. Original science experiments trace an inherited trait, help readers create their own family trees, teach about genes that are linked, and much more. Gardner also discusses DNA, cloning, and the question of nature versus nurture. Ideas for original science fair projects are included throughout the book.

Reviews

The reason for my not giving a rating for this book is that, for the most part, it is a very good, if not excellent, work, with a few relatively minor flaws, BUT with a significant (in my opinion) error that may warrant keeping it out of the hands of a young learner. On the positive side, this book provides a nicely laid out lesson in the fundamentals of genetics and inheritance, written in a clear and concise manner that should be easily understood by the intended audience. Some of the information may be beyond the grasp of the typical 11 or 12 year old; in fact, Gardner's lessons are similar to the level that we teach these concepts in our introductory college biology classes! A brief glossary is somewhat helpful in this regard, as is a list of other readings. As the book's main purpose is to provide ideas for science projects, the depth of background information should not interfere with the middle schooler's execution of the projects. The book could have omitted some of the sections that are essentially all text, without any related projects, but this extra information is certainly not harmful (except for possibly adding to the cost).
