OverviewI wrote this book for many reasons. As a retired history teacher, I watched the Trump administration stumble along for four years, often making the same mistakes as several other one-term presidents. John Adams was condemned by his opponents in 1798 for locking up his critics with the Alien and Sedition Acts. James Buchanan provided the nation with inept leadership which would set the stage for the Civil War when Lincoln was elected as his successor in 1860. Herbert Hoover was vilified in 1932 for gassing protesters during the Great Depression who were desperate to feed their starving children. Donald Trump promoted the mantra, lock her up when he ran against Hillary Clinton for president in 2016. The chant about locking up one's political opponents resonated throughout his presidency and was the go-to phrase whenever Trump faced criticism. During his four years in office, Trump pleaded with his own Justice Department to lock up former President Obama and his 2016 opponent, Hillary Clinton. In reality there was no basis in Trump's argument to lock up his perceived enemies, but at least eight men in his inner circle were charged with crimes and several of them were sentenced to prison terms. Like John Adams and Richard Nixon, Trump looked at politics through a lens of paranoia as he made lists of his political enemies. Like Hoover, Trump ordered the gassing of protesters who were demonstrating for justice with the Black Lives Matter efforts and Trump left office disseminating lies about having actually won his reelection. He left the nation broken and divided, much like Buchanan had done. His legacy will be tainted by the riot at the Capitol on January 6, 2021 where his followers attempted to stop the certification in Congress of the electoral vote. The pandemic of 2019 will be a stain on Trump's presidency because he focused inward as hundreds of thousands of citizens perished. To date, the nation has lost about a half million people to Covid-19 and the struggling economy and overburdened hospitals will forever mar the Trump legacy. My father was an immigrant, having first set foot on Ellis Island at the tender age of 18 months. Like so many immigrants, he worked hard to escape poverty and care for his family. He owned two businesses and provided jobs for hundreds of people as he reached for the American Dream. Trump is the grandson of an immigrant, but his attitude towards immigration deviates dramatically from my own. I wrote this book as a tribute to my father and grandparents, and to all immigrants, who are searching for peace and prosperity. Trump will be remembered for locking up refugee children in cages and never apologizing for any of his mistakes. The year 2021 will be a transition time where we as a nation begin to heal from the Trump era, to vanquish the coronavirus, to rebuild both the economy and a sense of dignity for the presidency and the nation. It is time to return to courtesy, civility and consideration of other people's viewpoints without crucifying reporters or condemning the free press. It is a time to heal the nation from anger and disappointment as we rebuild the American Dream so that everyone is included and no one is left to languish in the shadows of hunger and desperation.
