Overview

It's a case private investigator Johnny Havelock normally wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole. Police found a body in the back of his father's Bronco with a bullet hole in the head, and the old man is the most likely suspect. A country lawyer with a small-town practice north of Kingston, Warren Havelock has a violent temper and a problem with alcohol. He and Johnny haven't spoken in years. But when Johnny's sister asks for his help with tears in her eyes, well . . . it's game over. Meanwhile, an old friend shows up at his office asking for a big favor. Akwesasne Grand Chief Charlie Smoke's twelve-year-old grandson, Jack Kanatahonha Monday, has just lost his parents to a brutal murder in the St. Lawrence River. Charlie asks Johnny to look after the boy until the killers are found and dealt with. Sounds simple enough, right? As the stab wounds, contusions, and cracked ribs begin to add up, Johnny Havelock wonders if he should have gone into a quieter, less painful line of work.
