Overview

Letter writing is a lost art. In this era of 140-character limits and photo sharing, also lost are the reflections that come from putting pen to paper and pouring out not only the deepest parts of the soul but also the routine and mundane, the fanciful, and the helpful. And the love. For almost thirty years, Don Dickson wrote his children a letter each week. At first he did this to keep them apprised of family matters and upcoming events, but he soon ventured far beyond the comings and goings of everyday life. This is a book of excerpts from those letters, telling a broader story of a life lived in a quiet corner of Connecticut and, at a personal level, told with humor and wisdom-and always with love.

Reviews

"""A father wrote, a son collected, and voilà, here are Pop's letters. They reveal a patriarch who was devoted to family and embraced life with affection."" -Valerie Kreutzer, Author of A Girl Named Maria""John Dickson's third book, Have a Great Week, Love!, is a heartfelt and humorous collection of missives penned by a loving and witty father to his lucky and appreciative family over three decades."" -Kevin O'Hara, Author of Last of the Donkey Pilgrims""What a great read! My wife and I both enjoyed it. As I read it, I couldn't help but remember growing up in the eighties when writing letters back and forth in school was the norm that brought out the innocence and truths of adolescence. It was the effort put into writing that made it mean more than a text message from today."" -Nathan Aguinaga, Retired US Army Master Sergeant, Five-Time Author at Koehler Books""Pop's personality comes right through. Early on I felt like I could see him and hear him, even though I never met him. I was (pleasantly) surprised by his optimism, positive attitude in all things, and love for his family-especially that someone of that generation, with that upbringing, was so comfortable expressing his feelings. Pretty great. His love for his wife was apparent, and again, it was somewhat surprising that he (mostly) refrained from joking about her, as some husbands might, and was very clear in expressing his love. Wow."" -Jim Nealon, Author of Confederacy of Fenians"

Author Information

Raised in Brooklyn, New York, during the Depression, Don Dickson attended Princeton University on the GI Bill and had a twenty-five-year career as a marketing executive. The loss of his job, a crippling heart attack, and the death of his daughter landed him in Pomfret, Connecticut, starting a new chapter with his wife, Georganna. John Dickson has selected excerpts from his father's weekly letters to his children. John has previously written two books: Berkshire County's Industrial Heritage (Arcadia Press, 2017) and History Shock: When History Collides with Foreign Relations (University Press of Kansas, 2021).
