Overview

Hate crime in the United States is on the rise. The FBI has reported that hate crimes rose by 17 percent in 2017, increasing for the third straight year, and the trend continued into 2018 and 2019. The crimes are most commonly motivated by hatred related to race, ethnicity, or country of origin. Many crimes are also motivated by bias against sexual orientation or gender identity. Students will learn why hate crime is on the rise and how they can help combat it.

Reviews

"Current political topics are explored in these four informational volumes. All books contain up-to-date information and facts, but they are far from comprehensive. The authors convey strong convictions: Pharmaceutical companies are the primary cause of opioid addiction; hate crimes are mostly committed by white supremacists; and undocumented immigrants are largely responsible for the successful economy. She/He/They/Them devotes several pages advising how the LGBTQ community should be addressed and treated. VERDICT She/He/They/Them is the standout title in this series. However, readers seeking more balanced information on complex issues covered in the books will need to look elsewhere.--Margaret Nunes, Gwinnett County Public Library, GA ""School Library Journal"""

Author Information

Danielle Smith-Llera grew up in coastal Virginia, hearing unforgettable tales about her Mexican and Irish ancestors. She first moved overseas to teach in international schools in Hungary and Brazil. Life in the U.S. Foreign Service has taken her around the world to live in India, Jamaica, Romania, Belgium, the United Kingdom, and Washington, DC. She loves sharing stories--fiction, nonfiction, and a mixture of both--in classrooms, museum exhibits, and, of course, books.
