OverviewReflecting on changes in agrarian landscapes and aesthetics he has witnessed since the 1960s, Richard Scheuerman reaches back to influences from his first-generation immigrant ancestors-whom he extensively recorded-who had settled in rural districts over the previous century. Scheuerman discusses works by contemporary artists and authors celebrating agrarianism as a threatened way of life, and upon which humanity's wellbeing depends, and writes of farmers and inventors devoted to crop improvement. Harvest Horizons weaves together the author's life experiences from rural youth and student to educator and world traveler, that have resulted in a deep-seated passion for the importance of farming and for the works of those who continue to record its story in art and literature. In Horizons we are given the means, through a focused agrarian lens, to see the eloquent result. Table of ContentsReviews""Richard Scheuerman has examined a vast realm of agrarian literature found throughout the American West and wider world that informs interpretations of renowned paintings like Monet's Wheatstack series, van Gogh's vivid Grainfields collection, and the evocative harvest canvases of Millet and Breton. Much of this writing and art depicts the stolid nobility of rural life amidst trying circumstances and brings to mind moral obligations of stewardship and benevolence. These varied influences through art, literature, and country living have contributed through the years to efforts by my colleagues and family farmers to promote local food relief throughout the country in ""contemporary gleaning"" efforts like Second Harvest, and to support regional and state arts and humanities programs. Great art and literature encourage these important initiatives and renew agrarian vitality in this day of flat worlds and virtual connections. Seeking insight and inspiration from the images and stories in Harvest Horizons and the author's remarkable decade-long ""Harvest Project"" series wonderfully serves these worthy endeavors."" -Alexander C. McGregorPresident, The McGregor Company, Colfax Washington ""Richard Scheuerman's 'Harvest Project' series is the first comprehensive scholarly study of modern agrarian art and literature and is almost encyclopedic in content. Written by an exceptional educator, these works feature very extensive and useful appendices, endnotes, and bibliography. They are invaluable resources for anyone interested in exploring this recently designated genre. General readers, artists, and authors wishing to start or expand a collection focused on any aspect of this art and literature should have them."" -Mark L.
