Born in Tallahassee, Florida, and a veteran of the United States Coast Guard, Jon McCarthy is proud to be an emergency room paramedic. Since 1996, he has worked in emergency medical services in helicopters, clinics, hospitals, and on the streets of New Orleans. He is one of the cocreators of the New Orleans EMS Field Training Officer (FTO) program and served as the Lead FTO for five years. McCarthy was featured on The Learning Channel program Paramedics and has a side career as an actor.

Arthur Flavell has worked in a variety of occupational fields, ranging from construction to broadcast radio and television to aviation-both as a pilot and an airfield electronics maintainer. Underlying these seemingly disparate endeavors is a keen regard for language. It reveals itself in a fascination with stories and storytelling; a constant search for new and strange words and worlds. This love was engendered at an early age through reading and listening to storytellers ply their craft. A veteran of the United States Coast Guard, Jon McCarthy has worked professionally in EMS since 1996. He is one of the cocreators of the New Orleans EMS Field Training Officer program and served as the lead field training officer for nearly five years. McCarthy lives with his wife, his two sons, and a multitude of dogs and cats.
