OverviewEverything seemed to change when we rowed away from living on the Moondrifter, anchored-out, and moved onto a houseboat tied-up to what the land people called ""The Main Dock."" Suddenly we lived with neighbors, their dogs, automobiles in a parking lot, and rent. Furthermore, no sooner than our moving aboard, real estate speculators bought the waterfront shoreline and began ""upgrading"" the piers, raising rent, and evicting those who couldn't pay. The poems in Hard Ashore - Life on Land reveal the young man, poet Keith H. Emmons', nascent dilemma - the contrast between his poetic/spiritual insights and the banality, as he sees it, of his worldly environment. At bottom, the author is supported by his faith that underlying this frustration with the as-it-is nature of his surroundings lies a foundational peace, a meaningful substrate, an illimitable solace to which he adheres.
