Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, she departed her hometown with two suitcases and one thousand dollars to seek her fortune in Southern California. There, she found a more expansive life and the freedom to be herself.At fifty-two, Maria was a first-time bride. She and her husband, Eric, celebrated not just one but three weddings in five months in three different cities.
