OverviewFifteen of Hans Christian Andersen's beloved fairy tales, narrated by a full cast. Unlike the Brothers Grimm, who collected and retold folklore and fairy tales, Hans Christian Andersen adopted the most ancient literary forms and distilled them into a genre that was uniquely his own. Andersen's fairy tales, such as The Snow Queen, The Ugly Duckling, The Little Mermaid and The Nightingale, are remarkable for their sense of fantasy and magic, power of description, nuanced morals, and vivid imagination. They are like no others written before or since. Recognizing the literary merit of Andersen's own simple colloquial language, which Victorian translators and their imitators very often altered to sentimentalize or vulgarize, translator Erik Haugaard has remained faithful to the original text. Listeners will rediscover Hans Christian Andersen's best-known fairy tales, and find new favorites, all brought to life by a full cast. Stories include-The Princess and the Pea; Thumbelina; The Little Mermaid; The Emperor's New Clothes; The Steadfast Tin Soldier; The Wild Swans; The Nightingale; The Ugly Duckling; The Snow Queen; The Little Match Girl; The Will-o'-the-Wisps are in Town, said the Bog Witch; The Rags; The Adventures of a Thistle; Luck Can Be Found in a Stick; The Days of the Week Full Product DetailsAuthor: Erik Christian Haugaard , Hans Christian Andersen , Erik HaugaardPublisher: Random House USA Inc Imprint: Random House US Audio Dimensions: Width: 13.00cm , Height: 3.00cm , Length: 15.20cm Weight: 0.154kg ISBN: 9780525626053ISBN 10: 0525626050 Pages: 1 Publication Date: 01 May 2018 Recommended Age: From 10 years Audience: General/trade , General Format: Audio Publisher's Status: Active Availability: To order ![]() Stock availability from the supplier is unknown. Table of ContentsReviewsAuthor InformationHANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN (1805-75) was born in Odense, Denmark, the son of a poor shoemaker. He published his first novel and his first fairy tales in 1835; thereafter he wrote over 150 more of these stories, which have become classics in many languages. A lonely man who never married, Andersen was also an anxious man; he loved travelling, but would carry a coil of rope with him in case of fire in his hotel. Although he originally addressed his fairy tales to children (and some would maintain he had a streak of childhood in his nature) he insisted they were 'for all ages', and the gentleness and humor that are their characteristics are recognized by everyone.
