His work currently focuses on high-speed optical modulators and radio-frequency (RF) photonics. He received his Bachelor and Master of Engineering and Ph.D. degrees in electronics from Kyoto University in 1992, 1994, and 1997, respectively. He was at the Production Engineering Laboratory of Panasonic in 1994–1995; at the Venture Business Laboratory in Kyoto University, where he was engaged in research on electromagnetic scattering and near-field optics, in 1997-1998; and joined the Communications Research Laboratory, Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (currently, the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology) in 1998. He was also a visiting scholar at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of California at San Diego in 2004. He has served in his current position since April 2015. He is the chairman of the Task Group on Fixed Wireless Systems and Ground-Based Radar Systems (TG-FWS/GBRS) in the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity Wireless Group (AWG). He is a fellow of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) and a fellow of IEICE (The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers).
