Overview

Colic is one of the most common causes of illness in horses and is often felt to be an inevitable occurrence at some time in the horse's life. Onset can be quick, and it is essential that the cause of the illness be located as quickly as possible in orderto control pain and avoid potential complications. The signs of colic are often similar for both simple and life-threatening diseases, and the clinical signs change during the course of the disease making assessment and prognostication difficult. This new book provides the essential, up-to-date information about colic that the practitioner and student need to examine, diagnose, treat and manage horses with colic. Written by two respected and leading authorities in the equine field, Handbook of Equine Colic provides a succinct, easy-to-access and practical guide to the management and treatment of the horse with colic. There is also a chapter dealing with the prevention of colic, which is the aim of every horse owner and veterinarian. This is a practical guide to the diagnosis, management and treatment of this emergency condition. Easily-accessible information selected from the latest research enables effective treatment regimes to be implemented with the minimum of delay. A whole chapter is devoted to the discussion of good prognostication techniques and how to improve their accuracy. This is an essential purchase for every veterinarian who treats horses on either a regular or occasional basis, as well as for veterinary students, horse owners and other professionals involved with the day-to-day care of horses.

Reviews

This handbook on colic in the horse is written to provide useful information for the student and equine practitioner. Purpose: The purpose is to pare down the enormous volume of information on colic so that the important facts are available to the equine practitioner and student. These are worthy objectives, satisfied by this book in a unique way. Audience: The book is written for the equine practitioner and veterinary student. Its value could basically extend to include mixed animal practitionersthat deal with the occasional colic. Both authors are very credible authorities on this subject matter. Features: This book is a very well-balanced and well-written text on a critical subject. Crucial information is covered, especially in excellent sections on husbandry and prevention that are not available elsewhere. The parasite section is excellent. Although prognostication is important in academic sections, it is weakened by difficulty of application in the individual horse and the rapidity in which the data used to generate it becomes outdated as equine colic management improves. Assessment: This book is a unique, readable, and thorough overview of colic that is not available in other forms. Few, if any, other books available are as well directed at this audience. Doody's Rating: WHITE Handbook of Equine ColicButterworth-heinemann, 1999 Reviewer: David E. Freeman, MVB, PhD(University of Illinois College ofVeterinary Medicine)
