Overview

As South Vietnam fell to Communist forces in the spring of 1975, hundreds of thousands of South Vietnamese citizens fled the country. Most of them made their way to the United States. Camps were established at four military bases to house these people until they could be assimilated into American society. This is the story of one of those camps.

Author Information

Major Shimp served 20 years in the Marine Corps, first enlisting as a Private in 1990. He was selected for officer training in 1994, earned a commission in 1997, and retired in 2010. He served and excelled in every leadership and command position from Fire Team Leader through Company Commander, and served his entire career in the infantry, the most personnel-centric and leadership-critical specialty in the military. He served two combat tours in the Al Anbar province of Iraq with the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. The capstone of his military leadership career was serving as a leadership instructor and mentor for the Navy and Marine Corps ROTC at the University of Florida. His education includes a Bachelor of Science in History with a minor in Economics from Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, FL and a Master of Arts in History from the University of San Diego. Major Shimp's other published titles include-- Leading: Combat Validated Strategies from Corps to Corporate.
