OverviewHampton Wick lies on an important crossing of the River Thames. For five hundred years its bridge was the only fixed crossing between London and Staines. Its connections with the ancient town of Kingston on the opposite bank and the presence of the nearby Royal Palace of Hampton Court brought prosperity and the village grew from a hamlet of around 500 souls in 1750 to a peak of 3,400 in 1951. This is the last in a series of three books examining this fascinating period of rapid urban development. Together with its companion website at www.hamptonwickhistory.org.uk the books provide a unique illustrated catalogue of all 650 current buildings. Whether as someone who knows the area well or as a visitor, this project will allow the reader to understand the origins of the place and to explore today's Hampton Wick ... brick by brick.
