But when Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, Keione was told her house was destroyed. She knew life would never be the same after such a tragedy. However, two months after the hurricane, Keione came home to her pet hamster Hammy still alive in his cage, looking happy as ever but a little hungry. She was then inspired to write about Hammy, as he always symbolized incredible strength and perseverance after surviving such a horrific event.
