Overview

Halhata na Thathanka / Magpie and Buffalo, written and illustrated by Lakota author and artist Alfreda Beartrack Algeo, is the perfect introduction for young children to the important roles the American bison (commonly known as the American buffalo) has played in Lakota culture. With translations by Violet Catches, this board book also serves as a beginner's tool for learning Lakota terminology. Read along as Magpie (Halhata) teaches readers all the important ways Buffalo (Thathanka) has helped the Lakota people throughout history, providing them with food, clothing, and materials for their ceremonies. Intended for children ages 0–3.
