OverviewThis book has its roots in a series of events that began in 2008. One Saturday afternoon in mid-November I went to a barber shop very close to my home. The shop was a Fantastic Sam's franchise where I often had my hair cut. I was on friendly and familiar terms with the people who worked there. On that day I entered the shop carrying a camera. When it came my turn for a haircut, I hesitated to leave the camera in the waiting area, and took it with me to the chair. I had planned to hold it underneath the cape while my hair was being cut. But soon after the haircut began I saw an opportunity to take some photographs of the event. I asked the stylist, Hue Ngoc (Helen) Truong, whether she would mind if I took pictures, and she said she would not. So I flipped the monitor on the camera to face forward and took a series of pictures of myself and Hue Ngoc while she continued to work. The session yielded a dozen or so black-and-white photographs which I assembled into a small book entitled Haircut. The next weekend I took a copy of the book to the shop to give to Hue Ngoc. I had not anticipated how excited she and her co-workers would become when they saw the book. The shop owner, Kim Tran, liked the book so much that she wanted me to come back and take more photographs that she could use to promote her business. At the time Kim was preparing to buy herself out of the franchise, so she asked me to postpone any further photography until the shop was independent and under a new name. By the summer of 2010, Kim had established her salon under the new name, HAIR & US. She explained that the name reflected her two favorite things in life, saying, I love hair, and I love the U.S. In July, 2010, Kim said she was ready for me to come back and spend an afternoon photographing in the salon. The pictures in this book were all taken on Friday, July 16, 2010. Kim and her two employees, Hue Ngoc and Jim Castellana, dressed up for the occasion.
