First published in 1928, Federico García Lorca’s collection of Gypsy Ballads (Romancero gitano) marked his first major publication, and the beginning of his rise to fame. Depicting life in his native Andalucía, and the Romany peoples who lived there, it takes motifs of the countryside into its view, describing the night, the sky and the moon alongside more universal themes like life and death. Federico del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús García Lorca (1898–1936) was a Spanish poet, playwright and theatre director. Widely associated with the Generation of ’27 and the artists who dwelt in the same circles, Lorca rose to fame with his Gypsy Ballads (Romancero gitano), poems depicting life in Andalucía, his part of Spain. Lorca was known to be homosexual, and was an outspoken socialist, and he was assassinated by Nationalist forces at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. Despite dying aged just 38, he left behind a substantial bibliography, and his legacy as one of Spain’s foremost writers, and as a major icon of the international LGBTQ+ community, shows no sign of waning. Diego Jourdan Pereira writes, illustrates and packages trade books for general audiences – including story books for young readers, adult colouring books and puzzle books for seniors – while also translating Spanish-language classics into English, including Horacio Quiroga’s Tales of Love, Madness and Death.
