Author Information

Seung Hyup KIM, M.D., Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus of Radiology and Urology at Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH), Seoul, Korea. He is currently practicing at K-Radiology Clinic, the SNU Healthy Prostate Clinic, and Ewha Women’s University Mokdong Hospital.    Dr. Kim received his M.D. in 1979 and began his academic career as an instructor of radiology at Seoul National University (SNU) in 1987. He spent one year as a visiting scholar at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania before advancing through the academic ranks to become Professor of Radiology, Professor of Urology, and Associate Dean of SNU (2002–2004). He later served as Chair of the Department of Radiology (2008–2010) and Vice President of SNUH (2010–2013).   He has also held leadership roles in numerous Korean and international imaging societies, serving as President of the Korean Society of Ultrasound in Medicine (KSUM, 2007–2010), the Korean Society of Urogenital Radiology (KSUR, 2008–2009), the Asian Federation of Societies for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (AFSUMB, 2010–2012), the Asian Society of Abdominal Radiology (2009–2011), the Korean Society of Radiology (KSR, 2015–2018), and the World Federation for Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology (WFUMB, 2019–2021). In recognition of his contributions, Dr. Kim has been honored as an honorary member or fellow by many international imaging societies, including the European Society of Radiology, the American College of Radiology, and the Radiological Society of North America.   Dr. Kim’s subspecialty is urogenital imaging and intervention. He has authored 406 scientific publications and 24 monographs, including ‘Radiology Illustrated: Uroradiology’ and ‘Radiology Illustrated: Gynecologic Imaging’.    In accordance with the mandatory retirement policy at SNUH, Dr. Kim retired from SNU and SNUH in 2019. Since then, he has continued to practice, running a specialized urogenital imaging clinic within a nephrology hospital. His clinical work focuses on kidney ultrasound and expert consultation for urogenital CT and MRI. He also developed an educational website for radiologists (www.k-radiology.com), designed to support those less experienced in urogenital radiology.   Currently, Dr. Kim’s main research and clinical interest is nutcracker syndrome—a condition widely regarded as rare but, in fact, far more common than generally recognized. He recently published ‘Radiology Illustrated: Nutcracker Phenomenon and Nutcracker Syndrome’ as part of his Radiology Illustrated series.
