Gustave Le Bon (1841-1931) erlebte 1870 als Militärarzt in einem Lazarett den fanatischen Eifer, den die französischen Soldaten im deutsch-französischen Krieg an den Tag legten. Hier begann er sich erste Gedanken über die Manipulation der Volksseele zu machen. Ab 1881 betrieb er auf Reisen völkerkundliche Studien, und veröffentlichte mehrere Werke zu den Themengebieten Anthropologie, Archäologie und Ethnologie. 1895 schließlich erschien sein Hauptwerk Psychologie der Massen, das ihn zum einflussreichsten Soziologen seiner Zeit machte.
