Overview

"English summary: Twenty years after his death the noted artist Guenter Tollmann is given his proper place in public memory and in the art of the 20th century. After his studies at the Art Academy of Duesseldorf in the late 1950's, his large format style emerged, which referenced the Informel art style. He used the union of concentrated energy, the breaking open of forms and hazy, almost monochromatic, color patterns and developed them into dramatic events that quickly gained him considerable notoriety. From 1965 Tollmann turned to statuary. The artist earned international recognition for his tough, elegant, mobile sculptures made from plastic and steal. The sculptures, weighing tons, revolved elegantly in the wind. As a counter point to the stasis of surrounding architecture they are the symbols for the play of forces and the balance between stasis and dynamism. At the end of the 1970's Tollmann returned to painting. In depictions of the inner quest, surfaces with abstract expressionist colorfulness, the artist posed existential questions, which for him also stood in a religious context. ""Where do I come from? For what and why do I live?"" Thus a highly symbolic series of images emerged, such as the ""King Series,"" whose point of departure is the spiritual integration of humans in the cosmos or ""spiritual signatures,"" as the artist named them.
