After two years, he joined the Marine Corps and attended flight school in Pensacola as a Marine Aviation Cadet, earning a commission as a Naval Aviator in 1965. From March 1966 to April 1967, then-LT Ballentine served in Vietnam and flew armed UH-1Es in Marine Observation Squadron Six, stationed at Ky Ha, north of Chu Lai along the coast, 50 miles south of Danang.
