Overview

The time of life known as adolescence is distinctive and challenging for many young people Help is needed for parents to teach their children how to make responsible decisions without driving themselves or their families crazy or straining their relationships. Because their brain cells construct memories more easily, adolescents have a greater capacity for learning than adults do. Addiction, on the other hand, can take advantage of this enhanced flexibility and cause the teenage brain to become hooked more powerfully and for a longer period than the adult brain. Studies have shown that by the time girls reach their mid-teens, their brains are already a full two years more mature than the brains of boys, which may explain disparities observed in the classroom as well as in social behavior. It's possible that adolescents are not as resistant to the effects of drugs as we had previously imagined. Recent experimental and human studies show that even infrequent use of marijuana, for example, can cause memory problems that persist even days after smoking, and that long-term use of pot impacts IQ in later adulthood. One example of this is the use of marijuana to smoke a joint. It has been demonstrated that engaging in multiple tasks at once leads to fragmented attention and decreases a person's capacity for learning. Additionally, multitasking has certain addictive aspects, which may lead to youngsters developing a habit of having short attention spans. Emotionally taxing circumstances may have a greater influence on the adolescent than they would have on an adult: stress can have long-lasting consequences on mental health and can lead to a higher risk of acquiring psychiatric disorders such as depression.
