REVIEWS OF PREVIOUS EDITION This little book does a good job of qualifying the Rules... It is essential reading for anyone who goes to sea for business or pleasure or war. Fishing Boat World Written by experts in the subject, this book provides a concise text for all concerned with the practical and legal aspects of interpretation of, an compliance with, the Rules... The text sets out all the Rules with clear explanations of their meaning and gives excerpts from Court judgments to illustrate how they have been interpreted in practice Maritime Journal This is the guide for serious prefessionals who require a comprehensive understanding of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea. The authors are exceptionally well qualified to provide this commentary as they have been involved in successive revisions of the Rules. The full text of each rule is followed by a thorough discussion of its meaning, interpretation and implications. Useful sections contain extracts from the current STCW Code and provide manoeuvring characteristics for a number of ship types and the book is carefully indexed. The text and illustrations are clear. If you require an authoritative guide to the Rules this volume is the one for you. MER ... should be compulsory reading even for those who already have qualified... the use of coloured diagrams is particularly valuable... The many court judgments quoted are also helpful, not only demonstrating how breaches of what appear to be simple regulations can lead to disaster, but also showing how, by the appropriate course of action after a collision, the parties may make a coherent case in law. The Motor Ship Amazon: 5 star rating -- Essential for learning how to navigate safely. This book is used by the Royal Navy, the Royal Naval Reserve and the Merchant Navy to teach navigation. It is clear, simple and easy to use with exercises on each rule and the 'Rules of the Road' in green at the back. It's essential reading if you want to learn how to get from A to Z on the blue wavy stuff and not end up IN the brown smelly stuff!!! Jon Porter, Wirral, UK
